नमस्कार · A mechatronics lab from the Himalayas

मौन की छैनी, क्रांति का पर्वत। The chisel of silence. The mountain of revolution.

Maun ki chhaini, kranti ka parvat — literally: the chisel of silence, the mountain of revolution.

SL Innovation Centre, Dharamshala — where engineers from Himachal turn DIY kits into working answers for real local problems. Electronics, mechanics, mechatronics — संगठन से प्रज्ञा, प्रज्ञा से प्रगति।

About

लघु प्रांगण, असीम संकल्प।

SL Innovation Centre is a hands-on mechatronics lab set up in Dharamshala — for engineers who learn by building, not just by reading.

We bring together electronics, mechanical fabrication, and embedded systems under one roof. Diploma holders, ITI graduates, and self-taught makers from across Himachal walk in, follow a tight 3-stage path — assemble → modify → invent — and ship working prototypes that solve problems they grew up seeing.

We are the research wing of SidLabs Online LLP ↗ — a Startup-India recognised entity. No committee delays. Build first, paper later.

Vision

स्थानीय समस्याओं के लिए स्थानीय इंजीनियर.

We are building a generation of Himachali engineers who can look at a broken water pump, a stalled apple cold-chain, a wasted monastic boiler — and solve it themselves, in a week, with parts that fit in a backpack.

01

Hands first

Theory only after you’ve burned your finger on a soldering iron.

02

Local before global

Every project solves a problem you can drive to in under an hour.

03

Mindful pace

No sprint culture. The mountains set the rhythm — depth over speed.

04

Open by default

BOMs, code, build notes — all shared. We learn faster when we don’t hide.

Innovation Tracks

Four disciplines. One workbench.

Every engineer rotates through these tracks — because a mechatronics problem doesn’t care which textbook it belongs to.

Track 01 Electronics & Embedded

Soldering, sensors, microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, basic signal processing. From blinking LEDs to closed-loop control.

Track 02 Mechanical Fabrication

ITI-grade fitter / welder / turner / wood-work — converted into precision prototyping for housings, mounts, linkages, and enclosures.

Track 03 Mechatronics Integration

Where the two meet — actuators, motors, servos, vision, and the glue code that makes physical things respond to the world.

Track 04 Local Problem-Solving

Field visits to apple growers, monasteries, water bodies, ITIs. Problem framing, scoping, and shipping a v0 within 4 weeks.

Past Builds

What young engineers built, when given the tools.

These projects were built earlier under the same founder’s mentorship — with cardboard, duct tape, Raspberry Pi, and patience. The same maker ethos comes to Dharamshala.

Automatic Door Locker

Raspberry Pi 4 · servo · reed switch · 3D-printed latch

A teenage maker prototyping an auto-locking door rig from scratch — the founder’s earlier mentorship cohort. “What are you making?” — “I don’t know yet!” — the spirit we want every SLIC engineer to keep.

Door Locker — Final Demo

Iteration v2 · trigger logic · auto-close timer

The same project after two weeks of refinement — cleaner wiring, tighter response time, mounted on a dummy doorframe. Iteration is the whole point.

A DIY robotic hand built with duct tape, servos, and yellow electrical tape

Robotic Hand — DIY

4 servos · cardboard skeleton · duct-taped digits

What “build with what you have” actually looks like. Servos as actuators, wires for tendons, tape as skin. Crude — and brilliantly functional. This is the spirit of frugal engineering we celebrate.

A robotic target rig built on a Raspberry Pi with a toy gun base

Robotic Target Rig

Raspberry Pi 4 · servo trigger · foam projectile

A toy-gun base reworked into a programmable target shooter — built to teach trigger logic, projectile timing, and safe servo control. Playful surface, serious mechatronics underneath.

More projects from the Dharamshala cohort coming through 2026.

Collaboration Model

Plug in — at any level.

SLIC is small, fast, and partner-friendly. Three doors are open:

Problem owners
An NGO, panchayat, or co-op with a real-world problem we can prototype a solution for in 4–8 weeks.
Universities & ITIs
Internships, joint capstones, and shared curriculum. Hindi-medium learning materials returned to the community, free.
CSR & Sponsors
Sponsor a workbench, a kit, a cohort, or an entire problem track. Transparent BOM-level reporting; full IP traceability.

Why Dharamshala

कोलाहल से दूर, नवाचार का मूल।

Dharamshala is not a startup hub. That’s exactly why we’re here.

Mindful innovation

The mountains, the monasteries, the quiet — a setting that lets engineers think deeply, fail without an audience, and ship work they’re proud of.

Untapped talent

Himachali ITI and diploma graduates are skilled, disciplined, and starving for serious technical work. We hire them, train them, and pay them well.

Local problems, real impact

Apple cold-chain. Spring-water filtration. Off-grid monastic heating. Pine-needle fire mitigation. Solutions built here matter here first.

Reverse-brain-drain

You don’t need to leave the hills to build serious tech anymore. SLIC is the proof point.

Future Roadmap

The next three years.

  1. Phase 1 · 2026

    Setup & first cohort

Lab live in Shahpur. 5 engineers onboarded. 3–6 working prototypes shipped. Hindi training material library v1. Open-source BOM repository.

  2. Phase 2 · 2027

    Partnerships & depth

Formal MoUs with 2 ITIs and 1 university. 10–15 projects/year. First CSR partnerships. Innovation fellowship pilot for top performers.

  3. Phase 3 · 2028+

    Network & IP

SLIC fellowship in full swing. Patent-grade IP from 2–3 tracks. Sister-lab pilot in another Himachal town. Hindi-medium engineering curriculum offered freely to ITIs nationwide.
